Synopsis

Roberto is a young, promising Puerto Rican track runner and javelinist. Now that he's on his way to secondary school, he wants to take his speed and strength to the diamond. Yet, despite his amazing skills, no one believes there's a future for him in baseball. 

Following Clemente's journey from the moment when he first dreamt of playing ball, till the day he got his 3000 hits, "For the Ones They Took Away" is a coming-of-age story told as a celebration of intergenerational triumph.

The opera was commissioned by White Snake Projects as part of their Let’s Celebrate! Living Holiday Traditions in America festival (2020).

Two lovers – each with contrary opinions about Puerto Rican national identity – uncover how to prepare “authentic” coffee.


Production History
The play was presented at Theatre Now's Sound Bites 7.0 (2020), Nuyorican Poets Cafe (2018), WRCT 88.3FM Barrio Latino (2017), and Carnegie Mellon School of Drama Playground Festival (2016). It was first created through Carnegie Mellon's SURF Fellowship (2016). 

The play is a finalist for City Theatre National Award for Short Playwriting (2020) and was published by Bridge: Bluffton University Literary Journal (2019).

Production History

The piece was first written and workshopped at Carnegie Mellon's Theatre Lab (2019). The choreopoem has been performed at Carnegie Mellon's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Writing Awards, where it was awarded a Special Drama Award (2020); and at The Artist Co-Op as part of Poetic Theater Productions's Poetic Open Sessions (2019).
